It just occurred to me the holes he cut out render the balaclava useless because the purpose of a balaclava is to keep your nose & ears warm.

Real answer: the hole is because breathing moist air thru the fabric freezes it to your face in cold weather and becomes pretty unpleasant pretty quick. The first pic is close to how you’re intended to wear it, so that your breath goes out the hole and keeps the mask dry and warm. These masks are so much nicer to use in cold + dry environments when you’re getting exercise than the old style without the hole
The hole goes under the nose, btw for your nostrils
